The IOTA Foundation has introduced IOTA Rebased, a major upgrade to its Layer 1 protocol designed to bring full decentralization, Layer 1 programmability with MoveVM and EVM support, staking, and scalability exceeding 50,000 transactions per second. This new protocol represents a faster path toward the next-generation IOTA mainnet, with a governance vote confirming community approval in December 2024.

By combining the Move Virtual Machine with IOTA’s DAG-based architecture, IOTA Rebased enables true on-chain smart contracts and programmability at the base layer. This advancement opens the door for new use cases in DeFi, tokenization, and real-world asset integration — expanding IOTA’s mission to power scalable and energy-efficient digital infrastructure for enterprises, institutions, and governments.

Following the successful governance vote, the public testnet is live, and preparations for the mainnet release are underway. IOTA Rebased marks a pivotal step toward a fully decentralized, programmable, and industry-ready network, accelerating adoption and utility across the global IOTA ecosystem.
